Free Stained Glass Patterns

The patterns that I am offering free on this website are Glass Eye 2000 stained glass patterns that I have drawn myself. I absolutely love this software program!

The GlassEye 2000 software comes with a simple to follow tutorial. It is so much fun to use and stimulates my creativity. I have made patterns from photographs, from original drawings that I have scanned into my computer, and just from fooling around with the program.

The color pictures that I display here of my patterns are .jpgs exported from the Glass Eye 2000 after I have used actual glass samples to preview the finished result and select colors.

They are available as both .jpg and .eye (Glass Eye format.) I will be adding more patterns as time and energy permits, so add this page to your favorites and stop back often. Notice of new patterns, and updates to this site, will be made in the Stained Glass Blog.

These patterns are listed from the simplest to the most complex.

Simple Celtic Knot Stained Glass Pattern

I have a simple Celtic knot stained glass pattern for the beginner. This piece can have dramatic impact with the right glass. The form may be simple, but it is also timeless and powerful. It is shown here done completely in Spectrum waterglass in jewel tones. It has just ten easy pieces!

Celtic Knot Fan Lamp Stained Glass Pattern

This stained glass fan lamp is designed for use with a fan lamp base. This is a simple pattern, with clean lines, and looks beautiful in clear jewel tones on heavily textured clear glass. You may recognize the Celtic knot from the simple suncatcher pattern. Change the glass to opalescent for a more muted glow.

Native American Stained Glass Patterns

Navajo-inspired Geometric

This Navajo inspired two-toned geometric pattern combines simple shapes to create a stained glass piece with great potential for dramatic impact. It contains 34 pieces and can easily be done in copper foil or lead. Make the glass the star and enjoy the response.

It is shown here with Spectrum 1009S black smooth cathedral and Spectrum 151RR cherry red rough rolled cathedral. Click here to view this stained glass pattern in these colors.

Here is a second example done in Spectrum 1009S black smooth cathedral and Spectrum 1102W pale amber cathedral waterglass. You can see what a difference a change of color can make. Click to view.

A third example uses Armstrong 0176S opal yellow flamingo streaky and Armstrong 4100SO light blue opalescent. Click to view.

Slightly More Challenging Projects

For the mathematicians in the audience I have two patterns based on Penrose tilings. For the rest of us, they are simply beautiful geometrical patterns. For more information on Penrose tilings go here:

Penrose Rhombi - 110 pieces

There is an infinity of Penrose Tilings. This second Penrose tiling pattern uses the rhombus. The acute angles in the rhombi are 36 and 72 degrees.

Penrose Tilings have a number of astonishing properties. One is that any finite portion of any tiling is contained an infinite number of times in every other tiling. This means that you cannot tell, by examining a piece of a tiling, which pattern you are on!

Even More Challenging Stained Glass Projects

The “Batman” Cartwheel - 658 pieces

I have placed this in the “Even More Challenging Projects” section, not because of the complexity of the shapes, which are very straight-forward, but because of the sheer number of the pieces and the difficulty of keeping each piece in the proper order when they look so much alike. It can be a challenge to cut multiple pieces of the same shape and make them all exactly the same, so it is important to keep each piece in the correct location.
